Participation of Giropes in the new Foodback processing center in Mercabarna.

This time the Giropes team has worked on an important project of great social commitment

We went to Barcelona to visit Mercabarna, which is the principal fresh food wholesale market in Europe by sales volume. Mercabarna is without doubt Europe’s leading fresh food market, with 2.3 million tons traded per year and a total of 10 million consumers who buy fresh products there.

The Giropes team participated in the installation of several weighing points at different locations throughout Mercabarna.

Giropes  was a collaborating party in the Foodback, a new food recycling center opened by Mercabarna intended to turn waste into resources with both environmental and social impact.

Inside the Foodback, four BMS stainless steel scales with GI400i IP65 indicators and Ethernet connection were installed in a triage area. These scales are for weighing each container after separating the re-usable material from the non-reusable material. The latter is destined for human and animal consumption or for biofuel production.

Two B8C van weighing scales with GST2 terminals were also installed to perform a dual function. They will be used both for weighing the pallets assembled with the boxes of re-usable material and for weighing the vans loaded with these pallets before they are delivered to the different social organizations.

Recycling Industry

To expand the Green Point, Mercabarna's own waste collection and sorting center, two of our BPCTH concrete weighbridges with GST4 unattended weighing terminals and our GESNET2 software were installed. Along with these scales, video surveillance cameras and traffic lights were also installed in order to verify trucks entering and leaving the weighing center. The purpose of this installation is to weigh trucks loaded with waste before they enter the Green Point.
